Visiting Sapelo Island
DIRECTIONS
From Atlanta and areas to the west:
Take I-16 East to get to I-95 near Savannah, then follow directions below (from Savannah).
From Savannah, Ga., and areas to the north:
Take I-95 south to Exit 58 in Eulonia, GA, south of Savannah, GA. After exiting, turn left onto GA Hwy 99. Cross Hwy 17 (through the four-way stoplight). Continue until you get to the town of Meridian. (Small brown signs will point the way to Sapelo Island all along this route.) When you see the brown Sapelo sign pointing to the left, drive past the sign a few more feet to Landings Road by Elm Grove Baptist Church. Landings Road will make a sharp right turn and you’ll see a small bridge. Approximate time from Exit 58 to the dock is 30 minutes.
From Florida and Georgia towns to the south:
Take I-95 north to Exit 49 in Darien, GA. After exiting, turn right onto Hwy 251 and continue past McDonalds. Proceed to the end of the highway until you get to a T-intersection (you’ll see a Bi-Lo grocery store). (Small brown signs will point the way to Sapelo Island all along this route.) Turn left on U.S. 17, then turn right onto Blount Crossing Road. Continue until the road ends and turn left onto GA Hwy 99. Continue until you see the red-and-white sign for Elm Grove Baptist Church. Make a right turn onto Landings Road and the road will make a sharp right turn. You’ll cross a small bridge. Approximate time from Exit 49 to the dock is 20 minutes.
NOTE: For the annual Cultural Day festival every third Saturday in October, parking attendants will assist you. During other visits to Sapelo Island, park in the spaces before the bold line on the pavement and the sign indicating the beginning of the island resident parking area.
